Sedation and general anaesthesia are unfamiliar territory for most people, and it’s completely normal to have questions or feel uneasy about them. Cosmodent offers in-theatre treatment for anxious adults, children under 13, and complex procedures that benefit from a controlled theatre environment, so treatment doesn’t have to happen on your terms in a chair that isn’t working for you.

A Common Concern
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
It’s one of the first questions most people ask, and it’s a fair one. Sedation and general anaesthesia for dental treatment are administered under controlled clinical conditions, with you monitored throughout the procedure. The right choice of sedation depends on your health history and the treatment itself, which is exactly what gets discussed and assessed with Dr Dumas before anything is scheduled, not decided on the day.
Know the Difference
Sedation vs General Anaesthesia: What's the Difference?
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. Sedation relaxes you while you generally remain conscious or semi-conscious and can still respond, whereas general anaesthesia puts you into a controlled state of unconsciousness for the full procedure. Which one is appropriate depends on the treatment being performed and your own circumstances, and it’s something you’ll talk through before the day of treatment, not something you need to work out yourself beforehand.
Not Just for Major Surgery
Do I Need Sedation, or Is It Only for Complex Procedures?
Not necessarily. In-theatre treatment is often used for more involved procedures, but it’s also there for anxious adults who find it difficult to get through dental treatment in the regular chair, no matter how routine the procedure itself is. If dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a bad past experience has kept you away from the dentist, sedation can be the difference between putting treatment off indefinitely and actually getting it done.
For Parents
Is My Child Too Young for Sedation?
Cosmodent offers in-theatre treatment for children under 13, for situations where treatment in the regular chair isn’t realistic for a particular child or procedure. Every child is different, and rather than applying a blanket rule based on age alone, Dr Dumas assesses whether in-theatre treatment is the right approach for your child specifically, and talks you through what that means before you decide together.
On the Day
What Happens Before and After Treatment?
Before any in-theatre treatment, you’ll have a consultation covering what to expect, including any preparation needed beforehand, such as fasting instructions. Afterward, recovery time varies depending on whether sedation or general anaesthesia was used and the procedure performed, and you’ll be given clear guidance on what to expect and any care needed once you’re home, including arranging someone to take you or your child home afterward.
Still Have Questions?
If sedation or general anaesthesia is on your mind, for yourself or your child, the best next step is a conversation, not a decision made alone. See the full range of treatments at Cosmodent, or book a consultation directly on WhatsApp to talk through your options.
